• I was placed 11th of 134 in the graduating class of Logan High School. I was in Honor Society throughout my entire junior high and high school careers. I was also inducted into BETA Club; however, I was forced to drop it due to the costs of the club fees. I took two advanced placement courses in high school as well.

My family has never had much. My mom, dad and I have moved around my whole life, often losing our homes to disaster or lack of money. We’ve lived with relatives on multiple occasions and even to this day I stay with my grandmother when I go home. We’ve always had to dig for what we’ve got but I’m thankful in a sense that it’s lead me to be appreciative and humble with the things I’ve got and the things I achieve. We’ve moved from trailer to trailer, grandmother to grandmother, hotel to hotel, but we’ve managed to stick together. It’s also why I have been so persistent to go to college. My parents were supportive right off the bat. Since I was in 5th grade I’ve planned for college - of course the university has changed many times but I ended up choosing Marshall over all others because I love it’s people and programs so much. I am a first generation college student, so this process has been everything but easy - but I’m getting here. No matter the circumstances I am determined to prosper further than the gates of my little home town and to succeed past the life my family was thrusted into. And I am here despite all odds, and I’m doing pretty well too. I’ve gotten the Deans list every semester so far, and have made myself known to just about every professor in the Psychology Department. I’ve made life long friends, I’ve experienced the cultures and diversity of University life, I’ve met the girl of my dreams, I’ve accepted myself as a part of the LGBTQ+ community, and I’ve volunteered in the name of things I am passionate about. I’ve already achieved more than what my tiny little hometown could ever dream of, and I’m proud of myself for standing tall when my foundation was broken and battered.
Awards
• Awards for my art include a county-wide billboard design competition which promoted school attendance. I competed with the art classes of my high school, as well as the classes in the remaining high schools of Logan County to design the best billboard I could. I drew a cartoon display of the three high school mascots, a Goat, a Tiger, and a Wildcat. I can’t remember what exactly the phrase I wrote said, because the competition was my freshman year of high school but I won the competition and my art was displayed on a billboard in town.

• I won another art award my senior year of high school at the Marshall S.C.O.R.E.S competition. I won the 2nd place prize in Creative Writing: Poetry for my pre-entry poem. I wrote my piece symbolic to the inner struggles that come with having an eating disorder. I wrote the piece in the format of a battle, a metaphor for the inner psychological traumas and struggles that come with body dysmorphia.

Poetry and art have always been my favorite ways to spend my time. Reading published poems, watching performances on Button Poetry (a YouTube channel dedicated to poetry and performance), writing them, I love painting, sketching, and drawing comics. They’re all ways to express the world in your head, the wars, the peace, the meadows - all of it can be written or drawn into art; and it’s like there’s a never ending supply because one piece is never enough to express it all. I also think this is why I have such an interest in psychology. Coming from the small town I have, and going through all that I have gone through have caused me and many I love, to a life of trauma and psychological distress. Poverty can do a lot of things to a lot of people. Art is something that channels the energy of emotions - good or bad - and slaps it in a page for people to relate to and to feel. I also have a deep passion for music. Sadly, due to the lack of financial resources in my family, I was never taught to play an instrument. However, in the last couple of years I’ve done my best to teach myself some songs on my keyboard. It’s not much, and I don’t know more than a few songs but it’s still a passion I’d like to pursuez
