Prep for Prep:
A highly selective leadership development program that incorporates a rigorous 14-month academic component to prepare students for placement in leading independent schools and continues to work closely with the students through high school graduation and beyond.
As a member of the Prep for Prep community, I can celebrate my identity as a first-generation student of color. Prep for Prep has always been a home for me in that it wasn’t just an ethnic affinity space, but also it’s a place where everyone is transitioning into similar environments at school. Since ninth grade, I have applied for every opportunity that Prep offers to me. During that summer, I won the Institute for Entrepreneurship competition where I designed an app and pitched my business to a panel of judges, and during the following year, I tutored underprivileged fourth- and fifth-graders applying to Prep for Prep. The following summer I engaged in leadership development training and returned as a mentor to students in the business program that I completed the year before. This past summer, however, was my most impactful, as I took on a paid internship in finance. My boss had a very strong connection to the Prep for Prep community, and I was able to form a connection with others because of my foundations in the program. I also utilized Prep’s resources during the college process, which has been very difficult for me to navigate as the first person in my family to go to college. Once I leave high school, I am certain that the Prep community will have a lasting impact on my life and that I will always stay closely connected, especially by finding other Prep students on campus and extending our home together.

Debate has been a critical part of my life for the past three years. I first joined because I’m passionate about politics and wanted to learn how to argue my perspective in the most effective way. Now, I serve as Vice President and lead two weekly meetings, compete in monthly tournaments, and fulfill administrative duties. Debate is a major time commitment for me, but I look forward to meetings and love watching novice debaters become more confident and skilled. My role in the club has morphed into that of a mentor, and I take that role very seriously. I teach new debaters much more than the technical aspects of the sport and focus on helping them stand their ground in their arguments, even when faced with aggressive opponents. In my own experience, I’ve become much more assertive and confident in my ideas and abilities, especially as a woman of color.
Employment History
• Alpine Capital Bank: Over this past summer, I completed an internship with Alpine Capital Bank. In my work, I primarily used the Microsoft Excel and Word to generate risk assessments in cybersecurity, vendors, and equity, liquidity, and solvency. I also planned the annual intern dinner and office lunches in addition to designing and purchasing promotional merchandise. My work in the Bank was a strong learning experience that helped me in both accounting and generating financial reports.
• Sweetleaf: At Sweetleaf, I prepared food items and beverages for customers, worked the register, and used my position to share observations and ideas with my dad, the owner. Working for him was pretty challenging because the standards were higher for me and the rules were much stricter; I was told to be an example to people 10 years older than myself, which made me develop a strong work ethic that would carry through to now. I also developed better people skills and exercised my multitasking abilities.

History
Students Advocating for Young Children: SAYC is a Saturday academy where high-school sophomores and above have the opportunity to tutor underprivileged fourth- and fifth-graders in math and english. As a tutor, I prepare lesson plans with the other student leaders and participate in a weekly conference call to discuss teaching strategies and content. On Saturdays I teach lessons to the class in math and privately assist the students in completing their classwork and correcting their homework while other tutors teach lessons. SAYC has been an incredible experience for me because it has helped me have a positive impact on students much like myself.
