    To whom it may concern:
It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Doug Haines to further his academic and athletic career at your institution.
I have had the opportunity to coach Doug as a varsity football player for Pleasant Valley School District. Doug has shown a lot of growth and maturity in our time together. His commitment in the off season and his coachable personality allowed him to have a very successful senior season. He emerged as a team leader and someone younger student athletes could look up to.
Doug has never been a liability when it comes to academic eligibility. Understanding the value of time management, Doug not only juggled football, basketball and lacrosse, he also worked at Camelback Mountain Resort.
Based on my interactions with Doug, I strongly believe he is a positive representation of a student and athlete that Pleasant Valley should be proud of. It is for these reasons I hope you considered Doug Haines for acceptance into your academic institution.

    Sincerely,

    Matt Kosciolek

  • History West End Food Pantry
Over the summer I volunteered at The West End Food Pantry where I helped the less fortunate, and I had the opportunity to give back. The West End Food Pantry started November 21, 2015 (Teck). I never realized how many needy people are living in my community. The poverty level in Monroe County Township is 12.2 percent and the population is 167,126 (“Monroe County”). So that means 20,389 people live in poverty. For my Graduation Project I chose to volunteer at the West End Food Pantry, where I gave back to my community by helping those in need.
The reason why I selected the West End Food Pantry is because I know I can do a lot there to help people in my community. The way it will help the community is basically by just giving them hope to keep living and keep pushing to survive because some people who are struggling sometimes they think they cannot do it. I like helping people. I know I could be saving someone’s life. I feel I was a good fit because the things they had me do involved some heavy lifting, and I was able to lift and move heavy boxes.
The things I did at the West End Food Pantry was stock shelves, bring food out to people’s cars, and put food in people’s carts. I enjoyed performing these acts of kindness and seeing the smiles on people’s faces. It put a smile on my face and made me feel good. I was very good at everything I did because like I said it was all things I know I can do and it was simple acts of kindness. My favorite thing was bringing food out to their cars because just seeing them smile one last time before they left was a blessing, and sometimes I would get a hug and a handshake. I made a positive impact on the community because it influenced people to help out in other ways of the community.
Most importantly I learned the value of helping people who are less fortunate than me. It changed me in a positive way by making me perform more kind acts and being more aware. I hope I can find other organizations like the West End Food Pantry, so I can do the little things that matter the most.
The values I gained were realizing what I have, unlike some of these people it has taught me not to take advantage of the things I have. This is something I can do in the future from time to time. I should have brought in some clothes for them to give away and some food, but I did not think of it at the time. Now that I have seen how the poverty level affects families, it makes me want to give back a whole lot more.
In Blint-Walsh article “New York Emergency Food Program Gets More Funding, but will It Be Enough,” it describes how there is a certain budget for the food program from New York budget which is $89 Billion. More than 500 food pantries and soup kitchens rely heavily on the anti hunger program. In past year they struggled with financial instability and needed last minute infusions of money to fill financial gaps “(Blint-Walsh). The article is important because it shows how much money is needed for food. If the government helped donate more they would not have to make tough decisions, and their decisions would be how to use the money instead of rejecting people from getting food.
In conclusion, I am really grateful to have had the chance to volunteer at the West End Food Pantry and look forward to more experiences like this.
