I would not call myself a public speaker. I am an extrovert, that is for sure, but rarely have I spoken publicly on my own accord. I remember stepping out onto a stage with gleaming lights surrounding me, microphone in hand, talking to 700 people about my experience with Tourette’s Syndrome. It was one of the best and most frightening moments of my life, but it defines me to this day.
I have a huge passion for learning. Academic excellence is what I always strive for. It brings me great pleasure to make outstanding grades, and in many ways, has been my refuge from the challenges of Tourette’s. Tourette’s is a condition that causes involuntary bodily movements and sounds, which being involuntary, I cannot control them. Although it did not have a significant effect on my early life, I can say without a doubt, it has had a substantial effect on my teenage life.
I faced my biggest challenges with Tourette’s four years ago. As my condition worsened, it began to affect my school and social life. I had a great relationship with my teachers who asked me to speak on my disorder in front of my entire class. Some students were understanding, but most were far from it. It was hard for my peers to understand something they had never experienced. I was exhausted physically, mentally, and emotionally. Through all of it, I still had the desire and passion to learn and succeed just as much as ever. I told myself I was not going to be held back by anything.
I nervously stepped onto the stage and told my story to the crowd of 700 people and received a standing ovation. The experience changed my life. After that, I began to be more self-aware of my condition and what affected it. I found ways to better my condition and myself and as a result, high school has only gotten better through the years. I have reconnected with friends and made so many new friends who accept me for who I am. To this day I continue to work hard and maintain my academic reputation of straight A’s.
My ability to persevere in the face of adversity has opened the door to so many opportunities. It has also made me very passionate about serving those less fortunate. I’ve been given the opportunity to serve through the BETA club, National Honor Society, and Feed my Starving Children. I have received multiple Merit awards throughout my high school career and have even become an Adobe Certified Associate. I owe my success to many people who supported me during the
