I have always taken art classes, both in school and in private studio. While in high school, I also enrolled in community college art classes, taking Drawing (my HS Sophomore year), Painting (my HS Junior year) and am currently taking Ceramics and Printmaking while concurrently a High School Senior.
Ceramics is my favorite. I have attended Sweet Spirit Ceramics studio in San Rafael for the last five years, learning to hand build and throw on the wheel. I love being inspired by an idea and losing myself in the creative process. Sometimes I have an idea for something functional, or a whimsical animal figure, or maybe a gift for someone. Perhaps the most meaningful piece I've made was a cremation urn for my dad's ashes the summer he passed. I was in a week-long ceramics intensive while he was in the hospital dying. My mom and I talked about it, and I realized it was the one thing I could do for him. I was 14. It really turned out nicely. It's a rounded 18" tall vessel, glazed in cobalt blue, and engraved with his name and birth and death dates on the side. It sits on our mantle with his ashes inside.

My Educational and Career Goals
I grew up with nature all around me--the beaches, the hiking trails and the redwoods were my playground. I am passionate about sharing that with others, while working to preserve and renew those beautiful resources. Earning a University degree in Forestry or Environmental Science will provide an avenue for me to stay close to nature while applying the tools I’ve learned.
This aligns with my 5+ years of experience working with a summer camp for foster youth, which has also opened my eyes to the needs of youth in our communities. I see a future working with youth in Outdoor Education, either through the school system or not, while also promoting environmental preservation and restoration. To me, there is nothing more important than empowering the next generation (myself included) to be responsible stewards of the earth, while inspiring them to find creative solutions to our most dire global problems.
My goal is to work in the areas of environmental restoration/conservation/engineering and/or forestry. I want to be a part of making the world a more suitable, sustainable, and environmentally-conscious place. I want to be out in the fields saving plants and animals, helping people, lessening the harsh strain climate change has put on people and animals all over the world. I'm hoping that by going to University, it will open the door for me to study environmental science with lots of hands-on field work. I want to earn a rich background and understanding of the world's environmental crisis and be able to apply that to my future career in the field.
The parallel tracks of Environmental Science/Forestry and Outdoor Education perfectly blend the vision I have for my future. This past year in High School I have had two internships which demonstrate this. Last Fall, I worked with Vilda Nature, an Outdoor Education program for children. We hiked around our local reservoirs, learned about plants and animals, learned wilderness survival skills, and explored areas formerly inhabited by local Native tribes.
This Spring, I have been working with Turtle Island Restoration Network in their local SPAWN program in West Marin County. SPAWN’s mission is to restore the natural habitat for the Coho Salmon in Lagunitas Creek. My role has been to work in the nursery where we grow native Redwood trees, work with volunteer groups to plant the trees and pull invasi
